Some great news for PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch gamers

A new study has found that playing videogames on consoles like Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 can become a key strategy in coping with stress.

While the prices connected to buying new games on all the leading consoles appear to be rising, due in part to DLC and other add-ons – there is good news for gamers too.

A new study has found that a lot of gamers use their playtime to help relieve stress.

Dave surveyed 1,000 gamers aged 18 to 30 ahead of the brand new series of Dara O Briain’s Go 8 Bit, which returns Monday 12th February at 10pm.

And it was found that 55 per cent play videogames because it helps them to unwind.

47 per cent even went as far as to say that they thought performing well in a game had a positive impact on their lives outside of the screen.

Luke Hales, general manager of the Dave TV channel , said: “We’ve loved watching stars come together and unleash their competitive sides across the three series of Dara O Briain’s Go 8 Bit to date.

“This survey is incredibly revealing in showing the positive mental benefits of getting together for a gaming session.”

Other data collected by Researchers found that three in five of those surveyed played specifically to join friends or an established ‘clan’ to play with.

Hales added: “For those looking for support, gaming as a hobby can offer a confidence-boosting sense of achievement which may be lacking in other aspects of their lives.

“It’s also a great way to interact with people who have similar interests, socialise and make friends, and it’s a shame this side of pastime if often passed over by the media in favour of a negative headline.”

Season 3 of Dara O Briain’s Go 8 Bit launches Monday 12th February at 10pm only on Dave and is available to preview now on UKTV Play.

This follows the news that things appear to be shifting to a more digital outlook in the future.

EA’s chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen spoke more on the growing number of gamers downloading titles to the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 consoles during a recent earnings report.

It should also be noted that Sixty per cent of those surveyed consider gaming a key component of their social life.

When it comes to the genres best fitted for helping players to relieve stress, there were some clear winners.

Games in the Action & Adventure category were highlighted as the best to help relieve stress, followed by Shooter games and Puzzle games.

The industry is now sees around 40% for digital full game sales, with the trend set to increase every year.

Jorgensen commented: “I think at a minimum we should see five points of increase each year and hopefully it’s greater than that.

“We don’t see a cap anytime soon because we know more-and-more players are realising it’s a more convenient, easy and engaging way to play.

“Many players have been already buying extra content and thus have digital purchases as part of their overall game play,” said Jorgensen.

“And we believe the consumer will ultimately default towards convenience however that might be, it might be they still have store around the corner from him, or it might be that he doesn’t and it’s easy for them to buy digitally.

“But you’ll see us continue to do things to try to encourage people to buy digitally and we think that’s still major key as part of the future business.”
