Apple fans will soon be able to get their hands on the iOS 12 public beta
iOS 12 has just been officially revealed with this all-new and totally refreshed operating system bringing a swathe of improvements and extra features to Apple’s iPhone and iPad.
This new software was shown to the world at Apple’s WWDC Developers Conference last week and offers numerous upgrades including improvements to Siri and the Photos app.
Perhaps one of the most important announcements about iOS 12 is its ability to boost performance.
According to Apple, iOS 12 will make many tasks a lot faster with devices such as the iPhone 5s even getting better performance.
Tasks such as launching the Camera app will happen up to 70 per cent faster and typing your next text on the keyboard will appear up to 50 per cent faster.
Other extras include a new Screen Time feature, which lets you know how long you’ve been staring at the display, and something Apple is calling Memojis.
These animated characters can be made to look just like the user with a vast library of facial features, hairstyle and accessories available.
Once created they can then follow your exact facial expressions – as long as you own an iPhone X – which can then be sent to your contacts via Messages.
There’s plenty more in iOS 12 with our pick of the best 7 new features available here.
Apple iOS 12 includes new Memojis and an update to the Photos app
There’s no official release date for iOS 12 but it’s expected to be available to download from mid-September.
However, there is a very easy way to get this major update before anyone else.
Every year Apple allows users to sign up to its beta programme.
This test software gives the US technology giant an insight into how their new software is performing before it’s released to the masses.
So, if you fancy trying out iOS 12 here’s a guide to getting involved in the beta test.
How to sign-up to the iOS 12 Public Beta
iOS 12 brings a swathe of new features to your mobile device and is definitely worth the update.
However, before you even think about installing the public beta you need to ensure that your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch is compatible with iOS 12.
Most modern iPhones and tablets will work with iOS 12 although if you own an iPhone 5, 5c, or anything older, you won’t be able to test this new software.
Once you have determined that your Apple device is compatible, visit the Apple Beta Program website and enrol yourself in the program.
Apple is expected to release its public soon but by signing up you’ll get an alert when its ready to be downloaded.
Click Sign Up to kickstart the process, and then create a back-up of your device by connecting it to a computer with iTunes installed.
The iOS 12 public beta page is now available on Apple’s website
As a member of the Apple Beta Software Program, you’ll then be able to download the latest public beta, as well as subsequent updates, straight from the iOS Software Update.
Simply navigate to Settings > General > Software Update to find out whether a new iOS beta is available to download.
It’s also worth remembering that as public beta software has not yet been commercially released by Apple, it will probably contain errors or inaccuracies and may not function as well as commercially released software.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Apple wants the public to try iOS 12 but it strongly recommends installing on a secondary system or device and NOT your primary iPhone or iPad.
